School Program

Capable Kids offers an intensive, full–day program during the school year for children two years of age through fifth grade.   Children receive one-on-one instruction with opportunities for structured group learning throughout the day using the principles of applied behavior analysis with a specialization in applied verbal behavior.   Curriculum and goals for each child are developed based on individual learning needs across all areas of development.

Our treatment focuses on the following areas:

  • Self-Help & Adaptive Behavior
  • Motivation for Learning
  • Verbal Behavior & Functional Communication
  • Play & Social Interaction Skills
  • Academic Programming

Jaxson started at Capable Kids in the fall of 2011, when he was 2 ½ years old. At this time Jaxson was non-verbal and was not aware of what was going on around him.

After the first month at CK, Jaxson was already signing his favorite two things – jumping and candy! He was actually playing with matchbox cars and not putting them in his mouth. He was writing on paper and easels instead of all over everything else that he saw. He was also responding to his name most of the time!

As time went on at CK we found that Jaxson could only handle of few signs at a time. So they proceeded with Pecs cards which he wanted nothing to do with, the staff continued to work with us to find what would work best as a communication tool for Jaxson. He is now using an iPad to help him talk and this is working! It was like he has been using this communication device forever! We are only at the beginning steps with this but have come a long way already, as his frustration level has come down since he has a way to communicate!

With the added benefit of speech and occupation therapy services available at CK Jaxson continues to strive in all areas. Capable Kids also takes the children on field trips out in the community. This is huge! This has given Jaxson opportunity to attend story hour at the library, swimming at a local pool, walks to the park all of which have taught Jaxson about sitting, waiting, listening, and holding hands while walking on the sidewalk. It has not only taught him about the community, but it has helped teach the community a little more about children with autism and disabilities. We are very thankful for our positive experiences at Capable Kids!
